Re-imaging A Laptop

In the event that a MacBook hardware is still working, but that the operating system or software has gotten mangled, it is possible for you to restore the laptop hard drive to the exact state that it came in to you from the TOTL project.

Warning:  following this procedure will wipe out all data on the laptop’s hard drive.  Backup the student’s work before attempting this procedure.

- Only re-image a computer as a last resort.

  1. -Backup files before re-imaging or those files will be lost.

  2. 2)Double click the icon of the drive “Teacher Backup Drive” to boot from it. (NOTE: If the Teacher Backup Drive does not appear, the Firewire External Hard disk is not connected properly.  Check your connections and make sure it is powered on.  Do not proceed if this drive does not appear).

  3. 3)Wait for the computer to boot to the Finder, and you will see two disk icons: “Teacher Backup Drive” and “Macintosh HD.”   Macintosh HD is the internal drive of the MacBook you wish to re-image.

  4. 4)Double click on the disk icon for Teacher Backup Drive to open it:

  5. 5)Once open, you will see a few icons.  The three that matter are Disk Utility, and Teacher and Student disk images:

  6. 6) Decide whether you will use the Student disk image (for all student MacBooks) or the Teacher disk image (for all Teachers, IT Coordinators, CIOs and other faculty and staff).  Locate the appropriate icon as above, with the “.dmg” extension.

  7. 7)Click ONCE on the image file, and DRAG the icon of the image file onto the Disk Utility icon until the Disk Utility icon highlights:

  8. 8)This will launch the Disk Utility and the image that you wish to restore to the MacBook being worked on:

  9. 9)Click on the Macintosh HD icon on the left, and the Restore tab that appears on the right after clicking:

  10. 10) Two blanks will be available underneath the the Restore Tab:
    a) Source - the image file you wish to use to re-image the computer with.
    b) Destination - the MacBook internal hard drive you wish to re-image to.
Click the Macintosh HD icon and drag it into the DESTINATION blank.
Click the Teacher (or Student) Image icon and drag it to the Source blank.
You may wish to check the Erase Destination button, but it is not required.

  11. 11)When this is completed, click the Restore button.  You will be prompted to make sure you understand that you are about to erase the MacBook’s internal hard drive, and that all data will be erase as well.

Click OK if you are certain you wish to erase the hard drive and restore with the original image.  Click Cancel if you are not certain.
  12. 12)You will then be asked for an administrative password for the external firewire hard drive, in order to re-image the drive.  Enter the User name: Administrator.  The Password should be left blank.

Click OK, and the imaging process will begin and a blue progress bar will appear at the bottom of the window.
  13. 13) Once this progress bar has completed and disappeared, the MacBook is successfully imaged, and you may Restart it to configure it for your Student or Teacher.
